Weight watchers invariably look for easy way of fighting the expanding "bulge" around their waist due to indisciplined eating and there are waiting "angels" in many shapes and hues, willing to help them for a "price". Atkins diet, South Beach diet and a host of others have milked billions of dollars from such willing consumers with practically no benefit to most of them. Latest to arrive on the scene is the technology for dissolving the fat in specific areas in the body by injecting some biochemical substances, claimed to be effective by the promoters of this technique.
"Lipodissolve is a becoming a popular form of cosmetic treatment that claims to eliminate fat. But it remains controversial. The "fat melting" process is made up of a series of injections intended to dissolve away small pockets of fat from the body, permanently. The procedure is also known in the industry as mesotherapy, lipozap, lipotherapy, or injection lipolysis. The most commonly injected drugs used in lipodissolve are phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate, usually in various combinations with one another. But they are experimental because neither of these drugs has been approved by the FDA for dissolving fat, either alone or together".
Whether there is any science behind such a radical therapy is not precisely known. If bottulinum toxin is routinely used by the cosmetic industry for skin therapy, no logic will deter "shape-conscious" consumers from adopting this radical treatment for getting rid of the unwanted fat from "strategic" places in the body! Now that the safety agencies are worried about the safety of the new procedure, some developments can be expected to ban it or confirm its safety after necessary studies. Mean while the cosmetic industry can be expected to rake in billions of dollars through this technology from the weight conscious customers while the final verdict on the safety is awaited.
